Who Are We.

The Hungerford Jazz Forum was set up by Andy Richardson and George Wicks in 2002.

Beginning and intermediate players are welcome as we recognise that doing it for real is the best experience there is. Woodshedding is essential but it's a waste of time if you don't get up and blow!

The idea behind HJF was, and still is, to give performers of all ages the opportunity to perform for a live audience in a friendly environment.

HJF is pleased to recognise the support from a wide range of musicians and we are proud that we also have support from young musicians who are still at school.

HOW DOES HJF WORK:

HJF provides musicians of all levels with the opportunity to perform in public in friendly and supportive surroundings. The Legion’s excellent bar facilities contribute to providing a great evening’s entertainment.

How does it work? More experienced musicians may be chatting with friends and decide they want to play a particular tune and so talk to the man with the clipboard to book a spot. Others may come along having rehearsed something that they want to play. Again, a spot or even a mini-set of 2 or 3 numbers may be possible. Less experienced players may not have the confidence to do this, but they are welcome to take part in the open numbers which are published before each session. These players can join in playing the tune and even try improvising. On the other hand, if this seems to much there is no obligation to play even if they are already on stage. If you don’t play an instrument or sing just come along for an evening of jazz music in a friendly atmosphere.

The following list is being developed; it will suggest numbers which are fairly well known and straightforward. Recent Open Numbers are listed below. (the numbers should be available in commonly available Real or Fake books.)
